On Her Majesty's Secret Service is a visual narrative watercolor still life that depicts elements of the book of the same name, where Bond is found motoring through France from the Italian frontier at Ventimiglia, reflecting upon the culinary “sucker traps” that lured in unsuspecting “gourmandizing tourists.” Bond was fed up with the travel posters and rituals promoting wine and beaches, the antique bogosities cluttering up the mock-Breton auberges, where sleazy and expensive provender was passed off for food in the “Belly Region” of France. Fleming devotes significant details to this road trip of Bond, and this painting highlights objects quoted directly in the book.
